Navigating Without Google Maps on GrapheneOS: Monero-Bought Data + Offline Maps
Description
Navigation is the part of the phone that gives you away. Google Maps knows where you started, where you stopped, how long you sat there — and your data plan knows it's you doing it, because you bought that plan with a card in your legal name.
This video breaks the connection at both ends: mobile data purchased with Monero, and turn-by-turn navigation that runs on OpenStreetMap instead of Google.
THE DATA SIDE
- Why the SIM/eSIM is the weak link even on a hardened phone
- Buying an eSIM data plan with XMR — how the purchase actually works - What "anonymous data" really buys you, and what the network still sees (your towers, your movement) no matter who paid
- Costs vs. a normal postpaid plan, and where the friction shows up
THE MAPS SIDE
- CoMaps and Organic Maps: both OpenStreetMap-based, both fully offline,
CoMaps being the newer community fork of Organic Maps
- Downloading regions before you leave so routing never hits a server
- Search, POIs, bookmarks, and importing KML/GPX routes
- Driving, walking, cycling and transit routing side by side with Google's
- Where OSM data is excellent (Europe, trails, cities with active mappers)
and where it's thin (rural US business listings, brand-new construction)
- Honest gaps: no live traffic, no rerouting around a jam, occasional
routing decisions that are just wrong
- Quick note on OsmAnd if you want more knobs than CoMaps gives you
REAL-WORLD TEST
Actual navigation on the phone shown here — not a slideshow of screenshots.
WHY IT MATTERS
Every trip you take through Google Maps is a location history you can't unsend. Paying for data in Monero and routing offline doesn't make you invisible, but it does stop two of the biggest, most permanent leaks a phone produces.
The phone in this video runs GrapheneOS. That's not the focus here — the same setup works on stock Android or iOS with fewer guarantees. Full GrapheneOS install video is linked below.
